We had experience of having Bamboo/Bongulo Chicken a few times. The pictures I am sharing in this post are from a time we got severely scammed by a guy selling this on our short Trek to Katiki Falls. Originally, Bamboo Chicken is a delicacy which is cooked in a green bamboo. The chicken is marinated, then squeezed tightly into a green bamboo and closed with leaves or wheat flour to create a pressure cooker kind of situation for the chicken to nicely be cooked. Generally, the marinate is extremely spicy and boneless chicken is used.
When ordering Bamboo Chicken in and around the Araku area, one needs to be extremely careful of the person who is making it. Like we found out from this guy en route to Katiki Falls, the guy pestered us for over half a kilometre and we gave in. All he wanted was our money and he would have the chicken ready for us on our way back. He even showed us a live chicken which he promised would be used to make us the dish.
On return, what we found was that he had packed pre-cooked chicken into the bamboo and made a scene of extracting it. We could see that he tried hiding the chicken. The entire disk was full of bones and had a nasty taste unlike our previous encounters with Bamboo chicken where we couldn’t stop eating, this was disgusting. Hence, be very careful of ordering.
